Childhood Obesity – An Increasing Issue
Obesity in children has doubled for children between the ages of two and five since the 1970s. Alarming is an understatement; this is traumatic. It’s not right for toddlers to be overweight and according to this one article I read today, by the end of the decade nearly half of America’s children will be obese. Not enough exercise and accessibility to junk food could be the cause of all this. But it’s not just America having this problem; every country in the world is having to deal with this epidemic.
Chances are the child will also be obese if he has two obese parents due to heredity. From their parents, children can watch and learn a lot. The child may pick up certain habits such as if the parents do not eat balanced diets or doesn’t get any exercise. We as parents need to set good eating and exercising examples for our children so they understand the importance of doing the right things for your body.
Life has become much easier in today’s society and as a result, we become lazier. Kids don’t spend much time outside because of TV, computers, and video games. Families don’t spend that much time at the dinner table together; the faster dinner gets on the table, the better. Home cooked family meals are quickly disappearing.
Another sobering fact about an obese child is all the health problems they will experience at a young age. Type 2 diabetes, liver diseases, heart disease, high blood pressure, and many more are supposed to be found in adults, not children. However, more and more cases of these health problems are showing up in children.
Paying attention to what their children are eating, not only at home, but also when they are away is what parents need to do. Not only do we need to instill good eating habits early, but we also need to set examples ourselves. Buying foods with high content, sugar, and artificial preservatives should be avoided. A good idea is to make cookies instead of buying them from the store. Take time to make dinner, but don’t try to do it every night. You can order out every once in a while.
It’s possible for us to change the future. Helping our children live long and healthy lives is what we can do.
